How do I push myself to the next level?

Over the past couple of weeks there have been some small but significant and some big and significant things that have happened in my life. I decided nearly 2 years ago that I was going to pursue writing as a career seriously and started blogging. I started small by blogging on my literature platform: http://www.plantainperiodicals.wordpress.com and used it as an online space to post things I thought about life and literature. Slowly but surely people began to read and comment on the blog. It worked well for a while but then I noticed I was doing too much on that blog alone and needed to branch out. So I started this blog. Having two blogs has not been easy and I tend to type on one more than the other for a season. I am still learning how to balance my time between the two and gain the discipline needed to work well on both.

However the small platforms have opened doors and built my writing confidence in ways I could have never imagined. I have won several online blog awards, released my debut book this year (a compilation of poems and blog posts: http://www.nissimutale.com) and have been invited to speak at different events and fashion shows. I have also won my first real writers award: UK Zambians Excellence Award for writing. These fruits have only come about due to my starting small and realizing that I might not be where I want to be but I can start small with what I have.

However the one thing I have noticed is that it is hard to stay motivated and keep pushing myself to the next level. It is not easy at all to keep on top of things and focus on the fact that I am not in competition with anyone other than myself. There are so many distractions by way of thoughts, people and circumstances that I have to fight to look past or find a solution while keeping my eye on the prize. I thank God daily for my unique talents and giftings and pray that He will strengthen and empower me to do all I was born to do. That alone keeps me pushing to the next level.

If I can do it, you certainly can. Do not lose faith x

Nissi.
