Life could be a lot easier if…

image

This scripture popped up in my daily Bible app and immediately I thought…wow! This is so much that can be drawn from it but what really struck me was that there are mo surprises or worries for God because He created everything and knows everything. That He created me and wants the best for me and even amidst seemingly confusing and hopeless times, He is in control of everything. That my mind will never be able to grasp all of this but I am safe in Him.

Safe.

There is a  lot going on in the world, in our individual lives and I just want to encourage you and myself: God is all we need. The revelation, creativity and wisdom we gain just by knowing Him, spending time with Him is all we need.

God has it worked out you don’t have to!

The personal fight for change

This morning I was thinking about a change I want to make in my life. I have been playing with the idea of becoming vegetarian for health reasons. Because I have been thinking about it, I have instinctively started reducing the amount of meat I eat. I haven’t even tried to, it has just happened. Almost like my meat sensors are slowly being decreased. I have been thinking about this change because I have noticed that the more my mind grabs hold of the idea that I will be healthier without meat, the less i want it. It is quite amazing really because when I first considered going vegetarian, I thought it would be an almost impossible task.

This process has made me think about change in general and the way we over complicate it. I am convicted that if you are not 100% sold to the change you want to make, you get caught in this yoyo process of taking 2 steps forward and 5 steps back; generally living frustrated and hoping you could be a better person. I have lived like that myself and going through my current ‘journey to vegetarianism’, I have now experienced a better way. Today I pray that with whatever we decide to do, let us harness the beautiful power of the mind that God has given us. I also invite you to join me inviting God into every decision. With God guiding us and our minds fully set, it is impossible to fail. Impossible.

Lessons from dad

image

As you know a lot of my writing is about self-esteem, healing through talking, writing and the creative arts and genrally taking time to reflect on our unique experience. Along my journey I have met, coached and mentored young women (and myself) struggling to find their place in the world. My reflections have led me to think about the solid foundation my parents gave me and why I could always find my way back home. By “home”, I mean to the arms of God and His true identity for me.

There are some lessons, vital, life-changing lessons that I have learned from my dad (earthly father) along the way too that I have kept me grounded, at my best and ready to face any challenge. I am aware that many people have not had good experiences with their dad’s. Or maybe do not even know them. I am also aware that it is hard raising young men and women in this generation where it seems that morals are fluid and there are no golden rules of respect etc. This book draws on my experiences and the lessons I learned. I share them with you in the hope that they can change and enlighten your life as the lessons have mine.

I promise you, it is impossible to read these lessons and remain the same.

Are you on the right road?…

image

As the end of the year approaches, it is a time to reflect on the past months. A time to pull all the strands together of the days and seasons we have experienced. To see everything in the right perspective it is important that we draw God into this process and ask Him to show us what He wants us to see. To ask Him to show us the things we should be pleased we have accomplished or become, as well as the things that we could/ should have handled better or worked smarter in.

There was a time I used to self-reflect using only my mind and perspective. The result was me giving myself unrealistic expectations that left me feeling unfulfilled and frustrated. Because I did not have the God Perspective, I was pretty much blind to the really important things in life and what God wanted to do in it. It was like having the wrong prescription glasses on; I could guess what I was seeing but it was hit and miss.

As the end of this year approaches, I encourage you to join me in inviting God to show us what He wants us to see and how He wants us to see it. It is simple, just pray “God show me everything through your eyes”.

Peace!

When your identity is challenged…

image

Things happen that make us think about who we are; what we stand for and what we believe in. If we do not have a solid understanding of ourselves and values, it is easy to be rattled and displaced but whatever we see as a challenge. During my teenage years, I remember how hard it was to know what was ‘me’ and what wasn’t. Through trial and error I am now getting a better understanding of the actions, speech, thoughts and everything else that is or (is not) in line with me.

I read something this morning talking about the way we should be constantly assessing and reassessing the way we spend our days and ultimately our lives. The point was that we should not just be working for money or for status, power etc. We should be finding and living our best selves. Living for a personal mission. That could be teaching maths, raising kids, bringing others clarity and joy through music. Whatever it is, our focus should be on being who we are…Not someone else.

I am using today and this weekend to evaluate and re-group. Join me!

Making room for the good in life.

I was listening to a sermon this morning and the point was made that the word possession in Hebrew means you  have to dis-possess something else. It may sound obvious but in life how wrong do we get it? e.g. wanting to lose weight and still eat the same with no exercise; wanting to move forward in our careers and business without putting in the work; wanting someone to love us without knowing how to love ourselves. When you look at it that way possession is maybe not as easy as it appears.

The truth is God has already possessed every good thing we need. When we make the decision to let Him lead us, the one thing we should be focused on is having Him. To let Him be the main focus. The next thing that happens is He gives us the insight, peace and wisdom to see these good things, that we already have manifest. I realised that when I am struggling to get something God has already promised me, my focus is wrong. I need to look to God and be thankful. I need to get my peace and rest in the knowledge that all good things are already mine.

I talk more about such realities in my new book ‘Lessons from Dad’. You can get it here.

Emotions…

image

Feelings are tricky things. Sometimes they convince us that we cannot do something simply because we do not feel like doing it. Or we cannot obey God’s Word because we do not feel like doing it. In reality we can do both of the above if we got ourselves together i.e. keep our emotions under-control and work according to the power of the holy spirit God has given us.

If you read my blog often you will know that waking up on Mondays for me is a struggle. Big struggle. My emotions seem to run wild and I just feel like I cannot get out of bed and do anything. I feel like just staying in bed until I feel like getting up. In these moments I really have to check myself. I literally pray for God to remove these unhealthy thoughts and give me the strength to get up. Instead of focusing on the things I do not feel like doing. I change my focus on to what I can do. I usually jump up and put on my pilates videos or do some other exercise to shake up my body and my mind.

You see without God and a willingness to be positive and think the right thoughts, life is a huge struggle. We need to start questioning ourselves when we feel down, overwhelmed, angry, not bothered…all those feelings that cut us off from hope and God’s best. God has already given us the joy we need, we just need to tap into it.
