Life can often be overwhelming and our dreams seem too large. From a young age we are taught that dreams are things we think about that are too good to be true and have no, or very little possibility happening in the ‘real world’. I am a big dreamer and spend a lot of my time thinking about things that may seem impossible. However unlike a lot of people who reach a certain age and give up on their dreams or settle for less, I refuse to live a mediocre unhappy life. I have set my mind in such a way that if I do not understand the reasons behind why I am doing something I will not do it. Furthermore if what I am doing does not lead or help me in the direction of my dream destination I will not do it (excluding charitable works). This motto does not by any means mean that I only wait for once in a life time opportunities and take the easy roads. On the contrary it means that every single day I am forced to be bold and take control of my life by making my own opportunities.
I believe that to live trying to live up to the expectations that people have of you instead of following your God given hopes and dreams, is one of the saddest things a human being can do. To coast through life with no aim, falling into positions people force on you, with no thirst and passion to see another day is ultimately a waste of the life you have been given. Now I do understand that it is not easy to follow through on some dreams you have; sometimes choices we made in the past are stumbling blocks for our present, our the power in our lives or of our family is very oppressive, or maybe we have tried so hard before at the expense of those we love around us that we have given up for the sake of keeping our families together and ourselves sane. These are all difficult situations and of my own wisdom I do not have an answer as to how you can overcome the obstacle.
However I do believe in a God who is able to make a way in even the most impossible situations. I do not believe in a collective faith, or one size fits all when it comes to God and His will for our lives. I do believe that He has given us seemingly impossible dreams to show how He can move powerfully in our lives. Contrary to common belief my faith frees me from the oppression and subjectivity that people’s opinions and life throw at us.
This morning I read the following verses and was massively encouraged. My efforts daily to achieve my dreams may seem small but I believe that God is moving in big ways behind me.

6 So he said to me, “This is the word of the LORD to Zerubbabel: ‘Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,’ says the LORD Almighty.
7 “What are you, mighty mountain? Before Zerubbabel you will become level ground. Then he will bring out the capstone to shouts of ‘God bless it! God bless it!’”
8 Then the word of the LORD came to me: 9 “The hands of Zerubbabel have laid the foundation of this temple; his hands will also complete it. Then you will know that the LORD Almighty has sent me to you.
10 “Who dares despise the day of small things, since the seven eyes of the LORD that range throughout the earth will rejoice when they see the chosen capstone[a] in the hand of Zerubbabel?”

I’m also a believer in dreams, but the dream is only the first step. After the dream, comes action to make the dream take physical form, and after the action, comes the hard part: the persistence and patience to keep fighting for the dream even through failures and stumbles and criticism. Everyone can dream. Some can take action. But few can persist, but those who persist are the ones who have an opportunity to find success.
Definitely! To start is one thing, to follow through is another.
I came again to read your reply Nissi, but just couldn’t leave without saying how much I agree with the comment above by D.A.Adams. Especially the second part, ‘the hard part: the persistence and patience to keep fighting for the dream even through failures and stumbles and criticism.’ So true!
For me though, even the dream part is hard. I don’t know what I want.. in life.. from life. You know something to look forward to.. a reason to live, as opposed to just existing. That’s why I mentioned in my earlier comment, how lucky you were to have a dream in the first place.
It has hard to push on ordinarily, especially when you do not know what you are pushing for. Is there anything you dreamed of as a kid or generally love doing? What excites you and would do even if no one paid you?
