A poem for Zambian Independence – 47 years of freedom and peace.

Just before the creation of Zambia.

Yayyy!!! I am a proud Zambian and today we celebrate 47 years of independence. To mark the occassion I wrote a short poem…enjoy!

I am

I am not going to talk about the earth that birthed me

And spin long cliches about mother Africa and her bosom caressing me.

I am not even going to talk about the rhythm of the land and how now tall and free I stand.

I am not going to lament years of slavery and cuss the British who for many years brought us to our knees.

Looking back is an injustice and robs us of the developments and joy being sown today.

To remember is one thing but to obsess about yesterday is not worth the pain.

The important point is that today I am here able to express my opinion freely, chase my dreams passionately, and love all abundantly. That is what is important.

I am Zambian, I am free and I am at peace. That is what these 47 years really mean.

The blessing of ‘I am’ is what the 47 years has given me.
